RULES AND TONE

1. Don't be a dick. The first rule and the most important rule. Respect the other players. Everyone here is a person at the end of the day.

2. Use content warnings appropriately. Plays into respect above. Everyone is here to have fun, not get their face smashed into a panic attack by surprise.

3. Maintain activity. Activity Check is only one five-comment thread a month, but we're also looking to see player involvement and interaction. If you only ever thread with the same person and aren't interacting with people OOCly, you may still receive an Activity Warning, even if you meet AC requirements.

4. No explicit sexual content. Although the game is 18+, sexual content is not the focus of Lamplight. Please make use of "fade to black" and other forms of implied content, rather than playing out smut on the community.

5. Follow standard RP etiquette. IC =/= OOC, for both knowledge and behaviour. Don't godmod or infomod other players without their permission.

6. If in doubt, contact a mod. It's the game mods' job to help sort through conflicts between players and other problems. Please don't hesitate to contact us.

The use of "spookygame" instead of "horror game" in the game's blurb was an intentional decision, intended to convey the tone of the game. Although Lamplight is almost certainly within horror as a genre, the intent is not to create - and indeed, specifically to avoid creating - the kind of "tortureporn" environment that frequently occurs in horror games.

Rather, the intention is to create an environment that lends itself to facilitating character development in a positive direction - a crucible rather than a series of lead weights leading into a downward spiral. There is nothing wrong with a playstyle or arc that goes downwards instead of upwards, but it can be exhausting for your fellow players to have a character who just constantly drags the mood of the group down ICly. Although the mods recognize the need some players have for catharsis and "breaking" of characters, we have made the decision to open this game specifically for players who want to see their characters battered, but not broken. If that doesn't describe you and your playstyle, this game is not for you.

The overall vibe of the game is intended to be similar to Fallen London and other related projects by Failbetter Games. Explicit horror is rare; implied horror and general spooky aesthetic is extremely common. Even when horrific events are named explicitly, players are able to experience them a step or two removed, and the full impact of the situation often doesn't become apparent until later, after the player has had time to think it over. The tone works strictly because nothing is over-described and instead space is left for players to fill in the gaps. Similarly, there is a specific focus on allowing players in Lamplight to customize events to better suit their characters. The game is presented as a framework, and how you fill in the gaps is intentionally left open.
