PREMISE/INTRO

Fog, or perhaps the opposite of fog, rolls in, black and thick and smelling like rotten rain. No one around you notices. No one else reacts, at least as long as you can see them. When all is black except you, they're gone.

A sharp sting, somewhere on your body - if you weren't awake before, you are now. Something glowing in the corner of your eye, but when you turn towards it, it's gone.

The fog lifts, just a little. From where it is still deepest, you hear the sound of scuttling, or the sound of water, or the sound of your own heartbeat from somewhere outside your own body. You can't be sure of any of them.

From the direction where the mist is thinning, a voice - "Come on! This way, before they come back!"

The voice sounds like safety, like a child you once knew, like light. You run.

When the fog parts, there is no child, but there are the lights of a town around you. The darkness over your head is too deep to be night. If you turn back, there's nothing but a closed town gate, standing against the darkness.

Put a hand to the spot that stung, now only vaguely sore. There's no blood, but glittering light stains your fingers. It leaves behind a mark on your skin, spreading, somehow familiar even if you've never seen it before.

You'll live.

One way or another.

Lamplight is an invitation-only spookygame with primarily horror, exploration, and fantasy elements. Horror elements are focused on personal, psychological revelation and the things that go unseen, rather than on graphic horror, and the emotional focus is on hope rather than hopelessness. (In other words, there is no intention to create a tortureporn game, and players seeking misery spirals would be advised to look elsewhere.) The vibe is somewhere around Fallen London and other Failbetter titles, but not intended to be in any way compliant with that universe.

Characters arrive suddenly in the town of Lamplight, marked by some mysterious force, and must contend with the dangers of the dying world they find themselves in. Lamplight is a sparsely populated town in the shell of a much larger city, and danger lurks both inside and out - while conquering the dangers inside reclaims ruined parts of the city, exploration outside presents the opportunity for unique rewards and quicker plot advancement. There is no specific end date planned.
